Portugal at the world games 2005!! The national champion Chico Lopes joined the team of 15 men and 8 women that were chosen by individual countries for this non-Olympic sports competition that is held every 4 years and where the Wakeboarding is represented for the second time. Chico had a great performance at the qualification round and went directly to the semi-finals avoiding the LCQ. The high level of wakeboarding at the semi-finals didn’t make life easy for Chico that couldn’t make it to the finals. Congratulations for going so far and for the 11th place for Portugal. At the finals, after a near fall by Philip Soven in his first pass while attempting a Pete Rose, and tumble-turning himself off the water while hanging onto the handle on back and up to a riding position, Philip landed a Skeezer 540 and Nuclear Whirlybird 540 to take the gold. South African, Matt Lammers, won his first international medal landing a Pete Rose and Whirlybird 540 to take the silver medal. Switzerland's Mattias Koban took third place with a Tootsie Roll, KGB and Crow Mobe. China won their first world-level medal with a gold from Chen Li Li, edging out USA's Megan McNeil and Argentina's Robbie Rendo. Li Li's run included an Air Raley and Front Flip into the flats that the judges scored high in intensity. This was Li Li's second international contest win after her 1st place finish at the 2004 Wakeboard World Cup stop in Singapore. The next World Games will be held in Taiwan in 2009. Do you know where the 2004 world championship obstacles are? SEVILLAWAKE is the name of a new wakeboard camp located 5 minutes away from Seville at "Parque del Majuelo" in "La Rinconada". We were kindly host by António, the owner of this project, that pulled us up the guadalquivir river with is Super Air 210... and of course... we had to try the gigantic slider!!!! The Camp has all that it takes for the practising of high level wakeboarding. Like António says: "Con una tabla y muchos huevos..." (something like... "with a board and big balls...") (see pics) Check his site for more informations: http://spaces.msn.com/members/sevillawake |
